Artist Profile
John Newman was born in England and raised in Kenya and Uganda. He came to Australia in 1962 aged fourteen and settled in North Queensland. He has since lived in Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, but now has his studio on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Self taught he draws and paints the world around him with a compelling interest. His distinctive style of watercolour has been described as exemplary.
He received the Queensland Premier’s Arts Encouragement Award in 1991
One of Queensland’s best known artists John he has been a professional since 1986 and has been painting full time since 1993.He has had numerous solo exhibitions of his work in regional Queensland and now exhibits his work regularly in Melbourne and on the Sunshine Coast.
John has won many awards and received corporate commissions from major corporations including The Collinsville Coal Company, Newlands Coal, the NAC Coal Project, and The Stanwell Corporation.
His work was selected for inclusion in the Australian Guild of Realist Artist’s juried “Drawing the Essential Art” exhibitions in 2006 , 2007and 2008.
He was a feature artist in The Australian Artist Magazine February 1999, May 2007 and March 2008.
He is a member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists and the Royal Queensland Art Society.
John teaches both drawing techniques and watercolour workshops on demand in Australia and New Zealand. |
